Civil Engineering (the branch of engineering which deals with public works – specifically, their design, construction and maintenance) is a diverse and crucial profession. Public works include roads, sewage systems, airports, and municipal buildings – any work carried out by the state, for the benefit of the public. A civil engineer is anyone who practices civil engineering.

What Does A Civil Engineer Do?

Civil engineers do important, things like designing and making bridges and freeways, so that traffic can flow smoothly.   • A civil engineering degree from a recognized institution. To prepare for this, Math and Science at the high school level are a necessity civil engineering is a demanding field that requires logical thinking and an aptitude for Mathematics and Science. It is also wise to consider graduate school, since that will enhance advancement possibilities, and increase knowledge.
  • Excellent communication skills- verbal, and written, The ability to work in a group setting is also an asset, because civil engineers have to constantly deal with people from all levels of society.

In the US, the requirements for an engineering license are an engineering degree from an accredited institution, four years work experience in the field and success in a state engineering exam.
